Privacy Policy

Time and a Half is an independently owned and operated website for people in the construction trades. This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and what we will never do with it.

The short version

We never sell your personal information. Not to employers, not to advertisers, not to anyone.
We never give an employer information about your union membership, union status, hall membership, or views on organizing, about you or in aggregate. See Terms, Section 18.
Anonymous means anonymous. Reviews and crew answers never show who wrote them, and we will not reveal it on request. See Terms, Section 17.
No ad trackers and no outside analytics. We count visits ourselves, without storing your IP address.

What we collect

When you sign up

Your name and a display name
A handle, for Laydown Yard, Hall Talk and Crew Talk
Your primary trade and your state
Whether you are union or not, as you answer it. It is used to suggest halls or crews to you, and for nothing else.
Your phone number, to confirm you are a real, distinct person. We keep it two ways: a scrambled fingerprint (a keyed hash) so we can enforce one account per number, and an encrypted copy so we can send you sign-in and recovery codes. It is never shown to anyone.
A password, stored only as a secure hash
Confirmation that you are 18 or over and accept the Terms

If you choose to add it

An email address, used only to get you back into your account if your phone number stops being yours. We do not send anything else to it.

What you post

Work history, vouches you give and receive, reviews, answers, questions, leads, and posts. Who can see each of these is explained below.

When you use the site

Visit counting. To know how many people use the site, we record a visit using a scrambled key made from your account (when signed in) or from your connection details (when not). We never store your IP address itself.
Signed-out answers. If you tap an answer to a question without an account, we keep a scrambled key alongside it so one person cannot tap a hundred times. These are never counted in what the public sees.

Cookies

We use a small number of cookies, all our own, all for the site to work:

Sign-in, to keep you signed in
Sign-up and password reset, to carry you through those steps (they expire within the hour)
Your area, if you pick one, so the site shows that area first
Invite, to remember whose link you arrived on (for a week)
Return page, to bring you back where you were after signing in (for an hour)

No advertising cookies, and no third-party tracking cookies.

Who can see what

Anyone: company pages, jobsite pages, job leads (the job itself and how well backed it is), sourced jobs, and summaries that only appear once enough people have answered.
Signed-in members: a member's card and work history, who vouched for them, and who posted a lead.
Members of a hall only: that hall's member list and Hall Talk. Anyone else sees only that the hall exists and, once it is large enough, roughly how many members it has.
Nobody: who wrote a Shift Change review, who answered a crew question, or who asked one. Your Laydown Yard handle is never linked to your card for anyone but you.
Your phone number, email, and password are never shown to anyone.

Who we share information with

We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only:

With the services that run the site: Vercel (hosting), Supabase (the database), and Twilio (sending text message codes to your phone number). They process it for us and for no other purpose.
When the law requires it, and only as described in Terms, Section 17: valid legal process, reviewed first, with notice to you where the law allows.
To protect people, where there is an immediate risk of serious harm.

We never share union membership or status, hall membership, or organizing-related information with any employer or anyone acting for one.

Keeping it safe

Phone numbers are encrypted and fingerprinted, passwords are hashed, and visits are counted without raw IP addresses. No system is perfectly secure, but we collect as little as we can so there is less to protect.

Your choices

Change your card, work history, and settings from your card at any time.
Step away from your account from your card: it signs you out and stops notifications until you sign back in.
Delete your account by asking us through Feedback. Self-service deletion is not built yet, so a person handles it. Some things stay because they belong partly to other people: a vouch you gave someone can stay on their record without your name on it, and anonymous reviews and answers stay without any link to you.

Children

Time and a Half is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will say so on the site before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
